SURPRISE IN THIS YEARS 11 PLUS EXAM - ENGLISH SECTION

As 11 Plus exams for secondary school entrance are becoming more popular and thus competitive, it has been observed that the schools are experimenting with the pattern of the paper to suit their need perfectly to select better and more eligible students.

Some schools have been observed to change their exam patter from CEM to GL Assessment. Some schools though conducting GL assessment tests, preferred to stick only Numeracy and Literacy section.

These changes always come as surprise to the students and the parents if they are preparing for a particular pattern observed during past few years. Manish Salian, faculty at Champs Learning states “It has been observed, the students who has better conceptual understandings can cope up with these surprises as compared to the students who are just practicing tests only”.

This year too, one of the top grammar school from west London changed ther patters of questions from multiple choice to descriptive answering for both papers of Math and English in their stage 1 examination.

In English paper also there have been questions which are not from set patterns till date. One of the popular style of question in English paper has been Parajumbles.

Parajumble is a style of questions where you have been presented 3 or 4 sentences and asked to form a meaningful paragraph putting them in correct sequence. Else they can present you 3 or 4 small paragraphs and one has to put them into proper sequence to form a meaningful story.

Below you can find some sample question on Parajumbles.

Explanatory Answers

  1. Here, one cannot start “This may be” or “Those who have” as one does not know for what “This” or “Those” stand for. Therefore sentence 1 or 2 cannot be ‘general’ sentence. Sentence 3 is the best to become ‘general’ sentence. Look at the options. Only option (e) has sentence 3 as the ‘general’ sentence and hence the answer.
  2. Here, the ‘general’ sentence is sentence 3 followed by sentence 2. This is because sentence 2 starts with the word “Initially”. Sentence 1 and 4 is Mandatory Pair. Only option (d) has got these and hence the answer.
  3. Here the answer is option (d). This is because after sentence 1, sentence C is the best that comes. Sentence C and A is Mandatory Pair. Before sentence 2, sentence E is the best.
